Could Brushing your Teeth Help Prevent Dementia?

A long-term study looked at the development of dementia in elderly adults. At the beginning of the study they were questioned about their dental health and habits. This included whether they still had their own teeth or dentures. They were then followed-up using medical records and questionnaires to ascertain whether they had developed dementia.
The findings were quite supportive of good oral care helping to prevent dementia. It was found that males who had fewer or none of their original teeth left were at a greater risk of having dementia than those with more of their own teeth remaining. It was also found that females with poor oral hygiene habits had an increased risk of dementia compared to those who brushed multiple times a day. Additionally, males who had no recorded dentist visits in the last year were had a greater risk than those who had visited at least twice. The researchers concluded that good dental health was associated with a lower risk of dementia.
While there are some possible confounding factors that could have influenced these results, they still provide a strong correlation between oral health and other health problems. Why risk it?
