May Newsletter

Welcome to Midlands Smile Centres May email newsletter. This month’s issue contains information on Diet and Oral Hygiene, National Smile Month, Orthodontic FAQs and Working at MSC.

Diet and Oral Hygiene

A healthy diet can make a significant difference to your smile. Maintaining a good diet can improve your oral hygiene, and prevent problems from occurring. Here are a few tips.

Diet Hygiene

Try and avoid snacking, especially on sugary foods. Constant snacking means your teeth are always under attack from the sugar and acids in your food, leading to decay and cavities. Instead of snacking, try and have 3 regular meals a day. This gives your mouth time to recover between meals.

You should also try to keep as hydrated as possible. Your saliva acts as a great way of protecting your mouth against germs, and can also prevent bad breath, tooth decay and gum disease. So make sure you are drinking plenty of non-sugary drinks, such as water and milk, and try and keep drinks such as fruit juice and fizzy drinks to mealtimes.

National Smile Month

National Smile Month is the UKs biggest campaign to promote good oral health and hygiene. It aims to improve the UKs oral health, by promoting three important messages:

  • Brush your teeth last thing at night and on at least one other occasion with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks.
  • Visit your dentist regularly as often as they recommend.

What are you doing to celebrate the National Smile Month’s 40th birthday this year? You could try brushing your teeth a second time a day or chewing sugarless gum between meals. National Smile Month this year will be on 16th May – 16th June.

Orthodontic FAQs

Orthodontic Smile

What is Orthodontic treatment?
Orthodontics is a treatment method used to straighten teeth and correct bite.

How long does treatment take?
Treatment can take anywhere between 4-24 months, depending on the type of treatment and complexity. Retainers will need to be worn for a long period after treatment, to prevent the problem from reoccurring.

Does it hurt?
Orthodontic treatment doesn’t hurt, however your teeth may be a bit tender for a few days after the brace is fitted.

Who can have Orthodontic treatment?
Orthodontic treatment is available to almost everyone, from young to old. Please talk to your dentist to find out if Orthodontic treatment is for you.

What are the different type of Orthodontic treatment?
MSC offers normal Orthodontic braces, Six Months Smiles and Invisalign.

How do I take care of my braces?
Try and avoid eating sticky, chewy or crunchy foods, as they can get stuck in your braces and possibly damage them. Avoid sugar and fizzy drinks as much as possible. Remember to brush regularly.

What are the benefits of Orthodontic treatment?
Orthodontic treatment can help correct crowded, protruding or crooked teeth, giving you a full smile. It also improves oral hygiene as straighter teeth are easier to clean. This can help prevent conditions such as tooth decay, gum disease, bad breath and tooth loss.

Charity Dinner

Our administrative assistant, Indyah has organised a mouth cancer awareness charity dinner, to be held at Hyatt Regency Birmingham on 22nd July. The inspiration to organise this event came when a close friend was diagnosed with oral cancer.

This charity dinner comes with a champagne reception, entertainment from live musicians, a silent auction and games to raise additional money. Tickets cost £45.50, with profits shared between the Oral Health Foundations Mouth Cancer Action and the Mouth Cancer Foundation. You can buy tickets here.
