November Newsletter

Mouth Cancer is an insidious disease, more than 7,500 people are diagnosed with it in the UK every year. However, by spreading awareness we can help lower this number, and help more people get an early diagnosis. Find out more about Mouth Cancer Action Month, and what you can do to help below.

Mouth Cancer Action Month

Mouth Cancer Action Month is a charity campaign, with the aim to raise awareness of risk factors and symptoms of mouth cancer, whilst also encouraging discussion with dental professionals. By doing this, more mouth cancers can be diagnosed at an earlier stage. The main message of Mouth Cancer Action Month is “If in doubt get checked out”.

Supporting Mouth Cancer Action Month

You can help spread the word about Mouth Cancer Action Month in a number of ways. You can show support for the action month by wearing blue lips and taking a selfie, then sharing it on social media with the tag #bluelipselfie. Additionally, Blue Wednesday will be on Wednesday 16th of November. By wearing something blue, no matter how simple or bold, and then posting it on social media with the tag #mouthcanceraction you can help spread awareness.

The leading risk factors of mouth cancer are smoking, alcohol, diet, HPV and chewing or using smokeless tobacco. These risk factors have been shown to have a major part in contracting the disease; in fact, around 91% of all diagnoses are linked to these lifestyle choices. Mouth cancer is also strongly associated with age and gender, but it can affect anybody.

Be Mouthaware

Diagnosing mouth cancer early can improve survival rates by 40%, a significant increase. Mouth cancer can be spotted by your dentist through a thorough mouth examination. However, by being mouth-aware you can spot the signs much earlier. Be aware of any changes in your mouth, check for ulcers which don’t heal in three weeks, any red and white patches and unusual lumps or swellings.

If you notice any of these signs, or if you have any concerns you should get in touch with your local Midlands Smile Centre as soon as possible. They can give you a diagnosis and warn you of any factors in your life that could be increasing your risk of mouth cancer. Please do visit our website and book a dental appointment with one of our dentists if you are concerned.
